I Owe You

Recently, I took my family out for dinner. Once we arrived and had ordered, I discovered that we were dining at the last restaurant on earth that won’t accept credit cards. “CASH ONLY,” the sign read. I knew I was going to come up a bit short because I didn’t carry much cash. That’s when I noticed my daughter’s sparkly purple purse sitting on our table. I knew there was some cash in that purse because I had given it to her.

Sure enough, the check came, and I came up short.

“Lulu, can I borrow two dollars?” I asked.

Lulu responded, “Sure, but you owe me!” As you can imagine, Lulu didn’t stop reminding me about the money I owed her until I paid her back. Can you see the irony? I’m the one who gave her that two dollars in the first place. I’m the one who bought the purple purse that held the two dollars. I’m the one who paid for her dinner that required her two dollars! You get the idea. As parents we provide for our children—it’s what we do. So the thought of still owing my daughter two dollars cracked me up!

This is how I treat God sometimes. Everything I have is a gift from Him. Yet my prayers sometimes sound as if they’re coming from a heart that has forgotten this. I pray as if God owes me something when God owes me nothing.

Look around your life today and be reminded that every gift has come from the same source. We are the ones who owe Him everything. Yet all He asks is that you live for Him on this Day One.
